Sejak kecil, ia menunjukkan ketertarikan yang besar terhadap ilmu pengetahuan, meskipun saat itu perempuan menghadapi banyak keterbatasan dalam memperoleh pendidikan tinggi. Pada tahun 1898, pasangan ini berhasil menemukan dua unsur baru: polonium (dinamai berdasarkan tanah kelahirannya, Polandia) dan radium. Ia mendirikan Institut Radium di Paris, yang menjadi pusat penelitian radioaktivitas dan pengobatan kanker. Banyak ilmuwan dan peneliti setelahnya yang melanjutkan pekerjaannya untuk mengembangkan berbagai aplikasi dari radioaktivitas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marie Curie meninggal pada 4 Juli 1934 akibat paparan radiasi yang berkepanjangan selama bertahun-tahun.
